Grinding and full root removal are different jobs.
Grinding reduces the stump below the agreed surface level. It does not automatically remove the entire root system. Tell the provider whether you want lawn, a garden bed, paving or another tree in that spot; each plan may need different preparation.
For a larger construction change, ask whether excavation is required instead and what that means for surrounding soil and nearby trees.
Check access before booking the machine.
Measure the narrowest gate opening and note steps, retaining walls, slopes and soft ground. Tell the contractor about sprinkler lines, landscape lighting and privately installed utilities. The work plan should address underground services before grinding or digging.
Agree on what remains.
