Define the finished surface first.
Tell the provider whether the goal is removing a mowing obstacle, creating a bed or preparing for hardscape. Grinding leaves portions of roots in the ground; excavation is a different scope and can disturb a larger area.
Ask about chips and settlement.
Agree on chip disposal, soil replacement and the final level. Ask what maintenance may be needed as the area settles. Do not assume grinding includes a finished lawn or a planting-ready hole.
Check access and underground services.
Point out irrigation, lighting and privately installed lines. Confirm the locating plan before work. For the scope checklist, see stump grinding services.
